The two young girls were strangled and their bodies were found inside an oil tank, the Denver Post reported, citing a motion filed in court by an attorney for Watts.

Watts' attorneys did not say what motivated them to make the DNA requests. The bodies of Bella, 4, and Celeste, 3, were recovered later that day.

Henery declined to answer questions Friday about where the mother and daughters' bodies were found or whether police still are processing that scene. More testing is planned to help determine the cause of their deaths.

In a second motion, obtained by KDVR, defense attorneys asked the court to compel the coroner's office to look for DNA under the mother's fingernails and on her hands. Mr Eikelenboom has testified in several high-profile criminal trials, often on so-called "touch DNA" when small samples of genetic material are left on a surface.

The newspaper quotes "high-ranking" police sources who allege that Watts placed the bodies of the two young girls in tanks "that were mostly full".
