Former CIA directors and another half dozen of America's most senior spies have issued an unprecedented condemnation of President Donald Trump, after his decision to blacklist their colleague John Brennan. Bruce Ohr may be his next target.

Webb said that it is customary for top officials to keep their clearances in the case that they can be of further service to the nation, or be called back to help a future president with a security endeavor. Trump said he'd had to do "something" about the "rigged" federal probe of Russian election interference. "Bruce Ohr is a disgrace". "Revoking the security clearance of former Central Intelligence Agency chief is nothing but a blatant attempt to silence a critic, to take away his right to free speech, to purge him".

Ohr works in the Justice Department's criminal division.

President Donald Trump brushed off criticism from retired Adm. William McRaven Friday on the lifting of security clearances of administration opponents. "Decisions on security clearances should be based on national security and not political views".

McRaven was the commander who oversaw the 2011 Navy SEAL raid that killed al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden.

Brennan has been outspoken in his opposition to the Trump administration's foreign policy, particularly the president's support of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"Therefore, I would consider it an honor if you would revoke my security clearance as well, so I can add my name to the list of men and women who have spoken up against your presidency", McRaven said in the piece.

Earlier this week, press secretary Sarah Sanders was asked during a press briefing why Ohr isn't simply fired, rather than rendered unable to do much of his job if he loses his clearance. There has been speculation, according to the Washington Examiner, that Trump could try removing Bob Mueller's security clearance, as a tactic to end the investigation. The writers say they don't all agree with everything he's said, but, "Regardless, we all agree that the president's action regarding John Brennan and the threats of similar action against other former officials has nothing to do with who should and should not hold security clearances - and everything to do with an attempt to stifle free speech".

The president said he does not trust "many of those people on that list" and does not think they are "good people". "I've never respected him".

"If anything, I'm giving him a bigger voice", the president said. He added, "So I think it's something that had to be done".

Trump's comments, made to reporters as he boarded Marine One en route to a Republican campaign event in NY, came amid rising criticism of the president for using security clearances as a political tool. All are critics of the president or are people who Trump appears to believe are against him.
