Aftershock at 5.9-magnitude strikes Indonesian island days after quake

Emergency workers are gradually starting to reach more remote areas of Lombok as they continue their rescue missions.

"We are still waiting for assessments from some of the more remote areas in the north of the island, but it is already clear that Sunday's quake was exceptionally destructive", said Mr Rassi.

A magnitude-6.2 natural disaster occurred onshore on the northern part of Lombok Island in West Nusa Tenggara on Thursday afternoon (09/08), while the search for victims of Sunday's deadly quake continues.

He said his agency is "still verifying the correctness of the data".

The USGS said the latest quake had a magnitude of 5.9 - there are reports it brought down some buildings.

A field hospital has also been established near an evacuation centre catering to more than 500 people in the village of Tanjung.

Almost 1,500 people are in hospital with serious injuries and more than 156,000 have been displaced due to the extensive damage to thousands of homes.

"We were stuck in the traffic while delivering aid, suddenly it felt like our auto was hit from behind, it was so strong", witness Sri Laksmi told AFP. Tens of thousands are now sleeping out in the open or in the ruins of their homes.

It further weakened any buildings still standing on the island in the wake of Sunday's 7.0 quake, and a 6.4 quake on July 29 that killed 16, complicating rescue operations. "I don't think people will choose Lombok anymore this summer". In December 2004, a massive magnitude 9.1 quake off Sumatra triggered a tsunami that killed 230,000 people in a dozen countries.
