Trump says his son sought information on Clinton from Russians

As reported earlier on Sunday by CNBC, Donald Trump took to Twitter on Sunday to defend his son and namesake's meeting at Trump Tower from two years ago, noting that the talks between Donald Trump, Jr. and Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya were "totally legal" and acknowledging that the goal of the meeting was to gather derogatory information about Hillary Clinton ahead of the 2016 presidential elections.

That new admission, however, is completely at odds with the statement Trump crafted for use in the July 2017 news story that first reported the Trump Tower meeting.

Sunday's tweet appears to acknowledge that the meeting was actually predicated on opposition research: "This was a meeting to get information on an opponent". "I did not know about it!" the President tweeted.

Mr Trump also tweeted about the fires in California, which have destroyed dozens of homes and killed at least seven people.

It is not the first time the president acknowledged the existence of the meeting using this line of defense, but it is the president's most blunt admission that the objective was to obtain damaging information against his then opponent, Hillary Clinton, in the presidential election. Trump's tweet reveals that he lied past year when he personally dictated a statement, released by his son, Donald Trump Jr., which claimed the meeting was mostly about USA adoption of Russian children.

The meeting has come under intense scrutiny from Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating whether members of the Trump campaign coordinated with a Russian effort to sway the 2016 election in the Republican's favour.

Trump was responding to a Washington Post report this weekend that although he does not think his eldest son intentionally broke the law, he is anxious that Trump Jr. may have unintentionally stumbled into legal jeopardy and is embroiled in Mueller's investigation largely because of his connection to the president. "But I think, look, if you get a subpoena, you file what's called a motion to quash", Sekulow told ABC News' George Stephanopoulos on Sunday.

Later White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders had said the president weighed in, but didn't dictate a statement released in July 2017 on the meeting, which said the get-together was focused on Russian adoptions. This would make sense that Candidate Trump was aware, given the fact on June 7th, Candidate Trump said he was going to do a speech about Hillary Clinton's wrongdoings (the speech never happened).

"The question is what law, statue or rule or regulation's been violated?"

Sekulow also downplayed comments made by the president's other attorney, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who recently said that collusion is not a crime, calling them "rather unremarkable". They purposely cause great division & distrust. But more than most people, Trump loves things that have his name on them. Mueller was appointed to take over the probe after the firing.
