The longest total lunar eclipse of the century arrives Friday night, showcasing a blood moon for most of the Eastern Hemisphere.

The fullest eclipse, at 2022 GMT, will be visible from Europe, Russia, Africa, the Middle East, much of Asia and Australia.

Fabian said, "If you were standing on the moon in this eclipse, you would see the sun and then the earth would come in the way and blot out the sun". In Ethiopia's capital, Addis Ababa, people at an open-air restaurant admired a rare clear view during the rainy season, comparing a live NASA webcast to what they saw above.

In ancient times, this phenomenon was thought to be a bad omen, but now it is understood that it is simply due to the scattering of light by the air in our atmosphere. Join Miguel here as he takes us through his photograph "Total Lunar Eclipse of 2015".

This occurs when an eclipsed moon can be seen on one horizon, while the rising sun can be observed on the other.

When the moon moves into the conical shaped shadow of the earth, it stops being illuminated by sun, and gets dark.

In a special treat, Mars is also at its closest approach to Earth this week since 2003, making it appear bigger and brighter.

"The Earth doesn't rotate far enough this time around for anyone in North America - the United States and Alaska - to see the eclipse but there are other eclipses that we don't see, there's always a little bit of the Earth that misses out".

The moon will enter the penumbral shadow of the Earth between 10.44 pm and 10.53 pm, and will be followed by a partial eclipse from 11.54 pm.

The only sunlight hitting the moon comes from the surrounding edges of our planet giving the lunar landscape a reddish hue or burnt red color.

The eclipse of the moon will not be visible from North America or most of the Pacific.

Mars will more likely appear as a very bright star.

"All eclipses are spectacular", the Royal Astronomical Society's Robert Massey said.

As it rose, during this total eclipse, Earth's natural satellite turned a striking shade of red or ruddy brown.
