Trump's response to the criticism - an abruptly announced invitation for a second meeting in Washington in the fall - got an ice-cold reception from Republicans in Congress facing tough elections in November.

Sanders made no mention of Justice Department special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation.

Putin said that, in the meantime, it was possible that he and Trump would meet on the sidelines of the Group of 20 summit in Argentina in November, or at another global event. I am ready for that.

A summit last week between the pair in Helsinki caused Trump serious domestic problems, with the U.S. president accused of appeasing a man who allegedly tried to tilt the 2016 United States presidential election. "By the way, he has such an invitation, I told him of this".

Putin added: "I am ready to go to Washington".

But it's just talk at this point.

Putin said Russian Federation has no plans to reject the United States dollar, even though Washington has undermined trust in its currency by using it as an argument in political disputes. She said the Kremlin basically drove the entire process in Helsinki, and "we're seeing that again now". "They want President Trump to deliver on his election promises, to make the relationship better with Russian Federation, but they also see that he's not going to be able to do that if he continues to perform like he performed in Helsinki when standing next to President Putin".

But shouldn't some presidential meetings remain private? Trump has since walked back his remarks.

At the Helsinki summit, Mr Trump failed to confront Mr Putin over Moscow's alleged meddling in the 2016 U.S. election.

On Friday afternoon, Trump will convene a National Security Council meeting devoted to the issue of election security.

Last week, Mr Trump had suggested that Mr Putin should visit Washington this autumn.

A Fox News pool reporter was told by the White House that the reason for the bad weather call was 'bad weather.' When pressed, the official said there was fog.

"To be clear, we support a free press and ask that everyone be respectful of the president and guests at the White House", the communications officials concluded. "It can not stand", said the group's president, Olivier Knox.

Moscow has portrayed its tensions with Washington as a result of Trump being hobbled by domestic political disputes and a widespread "Russophobia" perpetrated by holdovers from the Obama years - echoing Trump's penchant to blame his predecessor for many problems.

He went on to praise Mr Trump, saying he "strives to fulfil the promises, above all, given to voters".

He did not clarify if that was a face-to-face invitation to be followed by a formal one.
