Ushakov confirmed that a meeting between members of the Russian Security Council and US National Security Adviser John Bolton was planned to take place in August.

The White House announced last week that Trump had directed Bolton to extend the invitation to Putin amid criticism of Trump's handling of a summit with close North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies and subsequent meeting with Putin in Helsinki, Finland.

Mueller has given no indication when his investigation of Russian election interference and the Trump campaign's possible collusion with Moscow will come to an end.

Since defending Putin in Helsinki and publicly doubting the U.S. intelligence community's findings, Trump has issued a stream of clarifications, corrections and conflicting statements that have prompted criticism from Democrats as well as members of his own party. White House press secretary Sarah Sanders tweeted that Trump asked Bolton to arrange for the meeting to take place in the fall.

Other signs had already emerged that raised doubts about a second Trump-Putin summit.

POMPEO: I've had a number of conversations with President Trump about what transpired in the meeting. And he called for Russian Federation to respect principles it claims to respect and "end its occupation of Crimea".

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said here Wednesday that he is committed to working with the Congress on a new Russian Federation sanctions bill, after he issued a "Crimea Declaration" that rejected Russia's control of Crimea.

The president met with Putin on the sidelines of two global summits previous year - first Germany, then Vietnam - and both times he invited his Russian counterpart to the White House, according to three current and former administration officials. Both presidents said after the summit that a big step forward had been taken.

Asked by reporters on Air Force One at the end of June whether the United States would recognize Russia's claim on Crimea, Trump ambiguously responded: "We're going to have to see".

Russian Federation will see no relief on Crimea-related sanctions until it returns control of the Crimean Peninsula to Ukraine, he added.

Testifying before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Pompeo said that he will support the bill to hold Russian Federation accountable for its behaviors around the globe.

Trump has always been seeking to bring Putin to Washington for a meeting.

He reiterated the invitation on a call with Mr Putin earlier this year.

Pompeo, whom Democrats accused of playing politics with the investigation into the 2012 attack on USA facilities in Benghazi, Libya, accused Menendez of pursuing a "political soliloquy" but then declined the opportunity to respond.
