Stage 17: An epic setting to shake the Tour de France up

The Tour de France is not something people in Britain ever used to take much notice of until Mark Cavendish started winning loads of stages, then Bradley Wiggins won the whole thing and Chris Froome won it three times- now we can't get enough of the damn thing!

Team Sky told AP there was a misunderstanding and when police asked the rider to stop, that caused him to crash. According to Team Sky, the officer assumed that Froome was a spectator as he descended the final climb with the team bus waiting towards the bottom.

"Briton Geraint Thomas, who is in the leader's yellow jersey, four-time victor and team-mate Chris Froome, and world champion Peter Sagan of Slovakia were among those affected", the BBC notes.

Thomas finished third on the Col du Portet, 47 seconds behind stage victor Nairo Quintana (Movistar) but put time into both Roglic and Dumoulin to add a few extra seconds to his lead.

First at the summit finish in La Rosière, first at the top of Alpe d'Huez, Thomas was third today behind Nairo Quintana and Dan Martin - but more importantly a long way ahead of Froome.

Thomas now leads Dumoulin by one minute and 59 seconds with Froome third at two minutes and 31 seconds.

"Froomey said on the radio ↕ maybe 5K or 4K to go that he wasn't feeling super", Thomas said after increasing his lead to almost two minutes over Tom Dumoulin. "It just gave me confidence, that someone of his stature was struggling".

Britain's Geraint Thomas solidified his position in the yellow jersey during the 17th stage.

"This was all I had, this was all we had today", Dumoulin continued.

Dumoulin rode clear with yellow jersey Thomas and fourth overall Primoz Roglic (LottoNL-Jumbo). "For me, so far, it has not been possible to gain time on him". But he appeared to be close to conceding this title attempt. "(Thomas) has ridden such an incredible race, he deserves to be in yellow and fingers crossed he holds it now until Paris".

Colombia's Nairo Quintana attacked on the gruelling final climb to Col du Portet.

Bales of hay blocked the road 26 kilometres (16 miles) into the day's ride from Carcassonne as farmers demonstrated against a cut in state aid.

Egan Arley Bernal performed a superb job for Froome and Thomas in the front group, with Romain Bardet (Ag2r-La Mondiale) the highest-profile rider dropped.

There were attacks from the start of an intense two and-a-half hours racing in the Pyrenees in the South of France and it was Columbian climber Quintana who crossed the finishing line first.
