Jurgen Klopp outlines his plan for Naby Keita

Liverpool spent a world record fee on a goalkeeper to bring Alisson to Anfield last week, but it has emerged they could have signed him for just £4 million in 2015.

Jurgen Klopp insists his 2016 comments criticising the eagerness to splash the cash in modern football are still true despite his own lavish spending in recent times at Liverpool.

Speaking before Liverpool's opening International Champions Cup match against Borussia Dortmund in North Carolina yesterday, Klopp said spending at the top end of the transfer market had moved on.

'We got him because he is the player he is and now we want to work with that, ' Klopp said.

It is almost 28 years since Liverpool last won a top-flight title in English football and it is fair to say that the club have struggled to match the exploits of their illustrious past during the Premier League era.

OL president Jean Michel Aulas said last week: "He's one of the best in France - and in the world, since he's a world champion. We have the players we wanted and I'm fine with that".

While the likes of Divock Origi and Dominic Solanke have struggled to make an impression, Sturridge has caught the eye every time he has taken to the field.

Then as soon as the deal was done Jurgen Klopp was saying the same things; don't expect any more arrivals.
