Rose ties Carnoustie lowest score in The Open

A five-under-par third round at The British Open has Tiger Woods in contention at a major for the first time in years.

That left him -3 for the week and six back at a stage but birdies at nine and 11 soon fired him back into the mix before a stunning eagle at the par five 14th shot him into the thick of the challenge.

The No. 2 player in the world, Justin Thomas, also was headed toward a weekend off. Thomas was 2 under for the tournament when it took him two shots to get out of a pot bunker in the sixth fairway and three putts from long range on the green, leading to double bogey.

On a day when Woods electrified the gallery with a 66 that pulled the 14-major victor within four strokes of the lead, Spieth, with three majors already, showed again that he is the man to beat of the current generation.

Birdies at the fourth and sixth took Woods to the turn in 34 and, with the leaders crumbling, gave the 42-year-old a one-shot lead over Molinari and Spieth, who double-bogeyed the sixth after hitting his second shot into a gorse bush. He said: "Playing the last four holes, I was pushing myself to make a couple more".

"I've shown that I've been there close enough with a chance to win this year", Woods said.

But, for much of the afternoon it looked as though everything was falling into place for Woods to pull off a barely believable victory, his first anywhere since 2013 - and first major since the 2008 US Open.

"It's going to be fun", Woods added.

GLOR: "What did you say to him?" I will tell you though, it better not be. "Putin and I discussed many important subjects at our earlier meeting".

He's so young and in two years it is another European Championships and then in four years another World Cup. Guardiola said: "What happened last season was a outcome of the work we did two seasons ago.

Woods was happy with the start to his 20th British Open and third at Carnoustie where he was tied for seventh in 1999 and finished 12th in 2007, although he felt it could have been even better had he taken advantage of the par fives. His first two holes were steady, if nothing else, with Woods at par through three.

Justin Rose was about 18 feet away from going home Friday when he made the birdie putt on the 18th to make the cut on the number. "There's always a chance I could play my way back into the tournament".

American great Ben Hogan managed it in 1953 having shared the 54-hole lead with Roberto De Vicenzo but generally it has been a case of so near and yet so far.

Johnson holed a 30-foot birdie putt on the 18th and had a one-shot lead over Tommy Fleetwood at the midway point of the second round. Instead of being two shots behind, he was four back, certainly not out of it. Fleetwood, the top player on the European Tour past year, put together the best round of the week at Carnoustie with a 65.

Four-times major champion Rory McIlroy was another to struggle, dropping two shots in his opening seven holes to drop back to three-under.

"I want them to see Dad do what he's done for most of his life", he told NBC, "and make them feel and watch what their father can do".

Tiger is back, but more importantly, so is his game. It was his lowest score in a major since 2011.

"I think I played it out at Augusta in my head".
