Investigators continued combing the area the day after an armed chase suspect ran into the market and held several people hostage for about three hours, starting around 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

His grandmother was taken to a hospital in critical condition but her current condition was not immediately known. Moore said at about 1:30 p.m. the suspect shot his grandmother and another woman in a South Los Angeles home and then forced the other woman into his grandmother's auto.

Police confirmed the man barricaded himself inside the supermarket after leading police on a chase and crashing his Toyota Camry into a pole outside the store.

Kohles says police fired at the male driver and shattered the store's glass doors. Six people were transported in fair condition and non-life threatening injuries.

The chase ended when the suspect crashed the vehicle, got out and ran into the store on Hyperion Avenue, Lopez said.

The suspect then left the area in the grandmother's vehicle, taking the other female with him, authorities said.

He could hear others around him sobbing as the man ran towards the back of the store and yelled at people, but Mr Kohles said he did not hear any more gunshots. "I grabbed an emergency ladder, barricaded the hallway, grabbed a weapon, put the ladder out the window, and just tried to get the attention of a SWAT officer".

About three hours after he took hostages in the store, the suspect surrendered.

Trader Joe's released a statement following the incident. Police believe a man involved in a standoff at the supermarket shot his grandmother and girlfriend.

Los Angeles police are responding to "an active incident" at a Trader Joe's in the city's Silver Lake neighborhood on Saturday, after a suspect opened fire outside the grocery store.

"Our hostage negotiators believed they had established a good rapport with him", the chief said. One person, an employee, was dragging an injured woman by the hands.

The chase ended with him crashing the auto outside the store and heading into the store. Police did not provide any additional details on Sunday and it remained unclear whether she died from police gunfire or was killed by the gunman.

Officers have been helping people escape the store through windows with a rope ladder and through the rear of the building.

US President Donald Trump had earlier tweeted that he was "watching Los Angeles possible hostage situation very closely".

"Those bullets went right over the back of me as he was running right down the main aisle", Kohles said.

Lynne Westafer, a KCBS-TV news producer, was one of those people inside the store. The store is now on lockdown, but customers are allowed exit through the back of the building.
