Although, admittedly, he might benefit from a loan move to a lower calibre Premier League club, he exhibited glimpses of his best last term and it is perceptible why Guardiola wants to hold onto him.

He last played for City in a Champions League qualifier against Steaua Bucharest in August 2016 having been axed by Guardiola following his arrival in Manchester two years ago.
