According to The New Yorker, Israel has joined forces with Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates and suggested to Trump that the U.S. should offer to cancel the sanctions it imposed on Russia four years ago, following Russia's annexation of the Crimea, in exchange for Russian action to remove Iranian forces from Syria. "He said Russian Federation will stand by Iran and will defend Tehran's rights", Velayati said.

Russian Federation has been Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's key ally in the seven-year-long civil war. But Israel has declined to comment on Syrian reports of other suspected Israeli strikes targeting Iranian-allied militant group Hezbollah in Syria in recent years.

However, he warned that if Iran and Russian Federation were to leave Syria in the current situation, terrorism would return to the Arab country again.

In a statement on Thursday, the Kremlin said the meeting between Putin and Velayati focused on regional security, particularly the situation in Syria, and the USA withdrawal from the 2015 worldwide nuclear deal. "We will help Syria counter the USA aggression".

Velayati also addressed the issue of Syria, saying military and political cooperation would ensure the support of the "legal governments of Syria and Iraq".

According to Velayati, trade between Iran and Russian Federation increased by 36% in the first four months of 2018. That incident came as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited Moscow for talks with Vladimir Putin about Syria and Iran.
