North Korean leader Kim Jong Un agreed to the "immediate repatriation" of remains that had already been identified (between 200 and 250 soldiers) during a June 12 meeting with President Donald Trump in Singapore.

Despite the apparent snub and worsening relations with North Korea, Donald Trump tweeted on Monday he has "confidence" that Mr Kim would honour the denuclearisation "contract" they signed at the Singapore summit.

The four-paragraph letter - an upbeat missive in which Kim voices hope in a "new future" and speaks of his "invariable trust" in Trump - is dated Jul 6, the day Secretary of State Mike Pompeo landed in North Korea for what turned out to be acrimonious talks with Kim's regime.

President Trump shared a letter from North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on Thursday, praising the work being done with that country.

A United States official waited at the border of the village but no North Korean official showed up, according to South Korea's Yonhap news agency.

North Korean representatives didn't show up for scheduled talks with the USA about returning the remains of fallen American soldiers.

Mr. Trump said he received "a very nice note" from Mr. Kim on Twitter.

"Just heard Foreign Minister of North Korea speak at U.N. If he echoes thoughts of Little Rocket Man, they won't be around much longer!"

But readers soon pointed out that the letter didn't actually mention any action that had been taken, and only made vague promises about 'the future progress of taking practical actions'. Despite the secretary's attempt to put a positive spin on the visit, as soon as he was out of the country, North Korea criticized his "unilateral and gangster-like" demands and called the talks "regrettable". That's according to documents seen by The Associated Press on Thursday and sent by the the Security Council committee monitoring the sanctions.

"Rocket Man" is a nickname Trump used to mock Kim a year ago when the two traded insults over North Korea's testing of nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles targeted at the US.

But North Korea's delegation failed show up to a scheduled meeting on Thursdayat the inter-Korean truce village of Panmunjom in the Demilitarized Zone between the two Koreas.

The South Korean president, Moon Jae-in, also downplayed the North Koreans' antics, stating it was all part of Pyongyang's "strategy" toward extracting more concessions from the United States. Trump added in his tweet.
