Brett Kavanaugh Tapped to Fill SCOTUS Seat, Setting Up Bitter Senate Clash

Asked repeatedly if some sort of deal between Trump and Kennedy was struck before Kennedy announced his retirement, Shah dodged, saying things like "I'm not going to read out private conversations that Justice Kennedy had with either members of the White House or the president", and, "Justice Kennedy can speak for himself". "He has even more experience on the bench, and even more of a reputation in legal circles, than Justice Gorsuch did".

Writing for the Minnesota Law Review in 2012, in an article titled "Separation of Powers During the Forty-Fourth Presidency and Beyond", Kavanaugh said his experience working for the Bush White House made him realize being president is "far more hard than any other civilian position in government".

Soon after Trump won the 2016 Presidential election, he made a vow to fill the Supreme Court with "pro-life" judges. Since 2006, he has served on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. "I am pleased to say that I have found, without doubt, such a person".

One measure of a judge's influence is how many of his clerks wind up working in the Supreme Court.

It is not yet a done deal as the nominee must be confirmed by the US Senate, which Trump's Republican party narrowly controls by 51-49. Corker took a harder line. Democratic senators running for re-election in states Trump carried in 2016 will face pressure to back his nominee.

In the days leading up to Trump's announcement, some conservatives were concerned Mr Kavanaugh would not be far enough to the right on certain issues including abortion and health care.

Some Republican senators had favored other options.

Responding to two potential criticisms of his argument-first, that nobody should be above the law, and second, that there must be a check against the bad or illegal behavior of presidents-Kavanaugh said he is only arguing for deferment of any action and that impeachment would remain an option.

Ex-Thai Navy Seal dies during cave rescue operation
He said their appearance at the final on 15 July would "undoubtedly be a wonderful moment of communion and celebration". These raise more fears about what could happen if the boys and coach attempt to escape the complex cave system.

Democrats and liberal advocacy groups quickly lined up in opposition. "In my federal criminal law class, I love teaching his opinions because they are smart, thoughtful, and clear".

The White House says Pence is also planning to attend the weekly Senate policy luncheon with Republican senators to discuss Trump's nominee. Feinstein is the ranking Democrat on the Judiciary Committee.

Republicans hold a slim 51-49 majority in the Senate, though with ailing Senator John McCain battling cancer in his home state of Arizona they now can muster only 50 votes.

Democrats have turned their attention to pressuring two Republicans, Sens. And-though he claimed to technically live by the creed of his Jesuit high school, "Men for others"-he appeared to also be subtly attempting to reassure Americans that he's not necessarily intent on overturning precedents like Roe v. Wade, which ensures access to abortion".

He is likely to be more socially conservative than his predecessor Kennedy on a range of social issues. The Susan B. Anthony List, which opposes abortion, plans news conferences Tuesday morning at the senate offices of Donnelly in South Bend, Indiana, Heitkamp in Bismarck, and Manchin in Charleston, West Virginia.

Kennedy's replacement also could be more willing to allow states to carry out executions and could support undoing earlier court holdings in the areas of racial discrimination in housing and the workplace.

"I believe that Judge Kavanaugh will carry out this role faithfully".

Republicans want a speedy process to ensure the vote is held well before the November 6 midterm elections in which all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 of the 100 Senate seats are up for grabs, with Democrats trying to seize control of Congress.
