Comcast adds that if you want full 4G LTE tethering speeds, you'll have to go with the "By the Gig" option. Carriers argue that many consumers can't tell the difference between 480p and higher quality on smartphone screens. "First, we're establishing 480p as the default resolution for streaming video over cellular data on Xfinity Mobile, which is consistent with standard unlimited plans across carriers". In other words, users with Unlimited plans can still stream at 720p but will have to call in order to activate that service.

One Comcast customer forwarded the email to Ars, and there's also a Reddit thread discussing the email.

Xfinity Mobile plans to offer a new tier of service with streaming at 720p later in the year, details about the plan are not yet available. That doesn't mean you'll never have the option of 720p mobile video streaming...you'll just have to pay more to access it.

Xfinity Mobile from Comcast launched a year ago, and now the wireless operator is making some big changes.

Comcast notified users that it is introducing some Xfinity Mobile throttling.

Do you know about Xfinity Mobile?

If you are a Comcast mobile subscriber and aren't OK with this change, you can contact Comcast and request an upgrade to 720p video.

Comcast only sells mobile service to customers who subscribe to Comcast home Internet.

For Unlimited customers: hotspot data will be limited to 600kbps and all cellular usage will be subject to limits of 1.5Mbps download/750kbps upload beyond 20GB used in a cycle. At this speed, you'll conserve data so that it takes longer to reach the 20 GB threshold but you'll still be able to do numerous online activities you enjoy.

Xfinity Mobile, a Mobile Virtual Network Operator owned by Comcast, has announced new restrictions on video quality and hotspot speeds. "Our By the Gig data option will continue to deliver 4G speeds for all data traffic". Second, we're setting personal hotspotting at 3G speeds for all Unlimited customers, which will allow customers to continue to do numerous things they enjoy doing online. But with these changes, it's looking less like a steal, and more like the rest of the unlimited data plans on the market - not really unlimited.
