Here's what LeBron James' free-agency means for Houston

James told the Cavaliers that he is not exercising his $35.6 million contract option for next season and will become an unrestricted free agent, two people familiar with the decision told the Associated Press today. Even that was a remote possibility.

Fast forward a year, and it looks like another superstar player isn't interested in playing with James either.

Philly would have to renounce guys like J.J. Redick and Amir Johnson to clear space, and probably trade Jerryd Bayless (with an asset attached) to make enough room for LeBron.

That trade didn't exactly work out, due in part to Thomas' prolonged recovery from injury, and he wound up being sent to Los Angeles, to the same team that is favored by many to land James. Of course, the 76ers have lagged far behind in the public conversation about the best player in the NBA's free agency.

LeBron James has reportedly declined the player option on the final year of his contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Again, Handy states that nobody knows what James will do for sure, but he presents pretty good reasons for why LeBron might stay in Cleveland. Vardon also reported that James' agent Rich Paul notified Cleveland of his decision Friday morning.

LeBron James could sign with the Lakers. He's talking about the Los Angeles Lakers.

Still, the two are not guaranteed the same path this offseason, as Kawhi would have to get traded if he wants to team up with LeBron outside of San Antonio. Rumors about multiple teams being in the hunt for the three-time National Basketball Association champion have already started. "The one thing that I've always done is consider my family, understanding especially where my boys are at this point in their age", he said about possibly leaving the Cavaliers after Game 4 of the NBA Finals. No team can offer James as much money or as many years as the Cavs. They were a lot younger the last time I made a decision like this four years ago.
