Leslie Grantham, Dirty Den in 'EastEnders,' dies at 71

A statement from his agent said he died on Friday morning and that a private funeral would be held. "You was West Ham, I am Spurs - but that didn't matter".

EastEnders icon Leslie Grantham has passed away at the age of 71. "RIP big man... loved working with ya in panto... you made me laugh and I learnt a lot from you too. absolutely gutted". "I shall remember him very fondly and with affection".

Grantham shot to fame playing Den in EastEnders, originally from 1985 to 1989.

Half of Britain's population, some 30 million people, watched a 1986 Christmas episode in which Den handed his wife divorce papers with the words "Happy Christmas, Ange".

Grantham first left Albert Square in 1989 after a criminal gang he was involved with, called The Firm, tried to kill him.

Grantham's final appearance in EastEnders was on the soap's 20th anniversary. "BUT there's no denying he was & will always be @bbceastenders greatest landlord #RIPLesleyGrantham".

Former co-stars banded together to share their memories, as actor Jay Grainger said: "Sad to hear today of the passing of Leslie Grantham - was a pleasure to have known and worked with".

According to The Sun, the screen star had been visited in hospital by close friends in the industry.

Prior to his EastEnders career, in 1967 he was convicted of murdering a German taxi driver while serving as a soldier, which he has always denied, and he went to prison until 1977.

And in 2004 he was revealed to have taken part in webcam sex sessions from his EastEnders dressing room at Elstree Studios.

He even took his talents overseas, finding fame on Bulgarian TV series The English Neighbour.
