Putin was the surprise guest of honour at FIFA's annual gathering on the eve of the World Cup, and was welcomed on stage by Gianni Infantino, the governing body's president.

It was a goal that prompted Russian President Vladimir Putin to turn to the Saudi crown prince Mohammed bin Salman, seated alongside Federation Internationale de Football Association chief Gianni Infantino, and shake his hand.

Russian fans did not have a lot of faith in their team after meagre results but the Luzhniki erupted for the first time in the 12th when Gazinsky rose unmarked to head a long cross from the left by Golovin into the bottom left corner.

Ahead of tomorrow's World Cup in Russia, FIFA has announced that the U.S., Mexico, and Canada have won a joint bid to host the 2026 World Cup, reports NBC.

Denis Cheryshev's fine double helped Russian Federation to a comfortable 5-0 victory over Saudi Arabia in the opening game of the 2018 World Cup.

This is Saudi Arabia's fifth appearance at the World Cup finals and their first since 2006.

Artyom Dzyuba made an instant impact off the bench to make it 3-0 in the 71st with a header off Golovin's cross.

Russian Federation dominated in front of a sell-out crowd of 78,011 - and millions more on TV - at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium and also overcame a major blow when forward Alan Dzagoev had to limp off midway through the first half with what appeared to be left hamstring injury.

What's next? The other two sides in Group A - Egypt and Uruguay - open their campaigns when they meet at midnight tonight (NZT).

Coach Juan Antonio Pizzi had earlier said that Saudi Arabia would play without fear on Thursday.
