Angela Merkel shares photo of ‘spontaneous’ meeting with Donald Trump, G7 leaders

A picture of US President Donald Trump and German Chancellor Angela Merkel displaying less-than-friendly body language has turned out to be a defining image of the contentious meeting of the G7 leaders of the world's advanced economies.

The photo first appeared on Merkel's official Instagram account around noon Saturday.

"We need Russian Federation for disarmament talks" and for discussions about both Ukraine and Syria, Merkel said.

Many social media users began to share Merkel's, suggesting there's noticeable tension in the photo. Trump said the tariffs are necessary for national security.

U.S. President Donald Trump called earlier on Friday for Russian Federation to be brought back into the global grouping - Moscow was expelled in the wake of its annexation of Ukraine's Crimean peninsula in 2014.

Mrs Merkel and the IMF's Christine Lagarde were meanwhile left looking at an empty seat before the late arrival of Mr Trump to a Gender Equality Advisory Council breakfast.

Mrs Merkel's photo has taken off on social media, spawning all sorts of memes and amusing caption contests.
