Chinese President Xi Jinping treated Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to a state visit on Friday as the neighboring giants forge closer ties in the face of U.S. diplomatic and economic challenges.

"Vladimir Putin chose to make Russian Federation unworthy of membership in the G8 by invading Ukraine and annexing Crimea".

Despite the conflict, Mallaby predicted that the countries would still seek to work with the United States, calling it "the indispensable country".

The two have met 25 times - five times past year alone, according to Putin's foreign affairs adviser, Yuri Ushakov.

One other G-7 leader, Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, said in a tweet he supports Trump's suggestion.

President Donald Trump said Russian Federation should be allowed back into the G8 bloc as he left the White House Friday for 24 hours of trade talks with allies where he intends to press his case that the USA loses through poor economic deals negotiated by his predecessors.

"Looking forward to straightening out unfair Trade Deals with the G-7 countries".

Before arriving at the meeting of the group, which some suggest Trump is pushing from the Group of Seven into "G-6 plus one", he further stirred the pot by asking why Russian Federation was excluded. "They are related to the pragmatic national interests of the United States", Putin said. We will straighten that out. "If it doesn't happen, we come out even better!"

A few days ago, the Trump dispensation slapped stiff tariffs on steel and aluminum imports on five of its six G7 partners.

"I saw some of those reports [and] we all kind of chuckled and laughed".

Trump's first meeting at the summer resort on St Lawrence river is with his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, followed by sessions with the full summit, and then a bilateral with the host, Justin Trudeau, in the early evening.

The White House announced his travel plans after Macron and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau signalled they will use the event to take a stance against new U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminium imports.

Xi also spoke of the increased number of visits from Chinese to Russia and also of Russians to China.

The quarrel sparked bi-lateral meetings in Canada. Later the leaders were to tuck into a dinner of lobster, asparagus and maple leaves nestled on a brioche at the end of the first day of talks.

"Didn't you guys burn down the White House?" the commander-in-chief replied, referring to an incident in the War of 1812, in which British troops burned down the White House at a time when Canada was still a British colony, and more than a century away from independence.

Xi noted that the importance of trade between the two countries is significant beyond its sheer volume due to the strategically important goods exchanged between China and Russian Federation including energy supplies, energy extraction hardware, new environmentally friendly technology, space exploration technology, aviation equipment, terrestrial transport technology and other heavy machinery.
