Almost 200 people are missing and at least 75 have been killed since Guatemala's Fuego volcano began erupting over the weekend, officials said Tuesday.

Guatemalan authorities on Wednesday warned the Fuego volcano was showing signs of greater activity as the death toll from a devastating eruption at the weekend climbed to 75 and nearly 200 people remained missing.

On Tuesday, the volcano sent ash 16,000 feet in the sky.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday night spoke with Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales, and offered him condolences for the deaths caused by the country's catastrophic volcanic eruption.

Officials said the speed and ferocity of the eruption took mountain communities by surprise, with numerous dead found in or around their homes.

The search and rescue crews fought desperately to pull people - some still alive, and those already dead - from the ash, some of it piled as high as the street signs.

Explosions boomed from Guatemala's fearsome Fuego volcano Wednesday, unleashing fresh torrents of mud and ash down slopes, as the death toll from a previous eruption rose to at least 99.

SAN MIGUEL LOS LOTES, Guatemala Emergency crews cautiously resumed search-and-rescue operations today in towns and villages devastated by the eruption of Guatemala's Volcano of Fire, but time was quickly running out to find survivors of a disaster with 75 confirmed dead and almost 200 still missing.

Explosions boomed from the 3,763-metre volcano Wednesday, unleashing a new flow of risky volcanic material and forcing the rescuers to suspend the search for victims, Xinhua news agency reported.

'It's saddening': Massive river of lava wipes out hundreds of homes
Lava has inundated most of Vacationland and has covered all but the northern part of Kapoho Beach Lots. And it not only took homes, it completely filled Kapoho Bay , extending 0.8 miles from the coastline.

According to Sanchez, Sunday's eruption is the most violent explosion of Fuego volcano since 1974.

The prospects of finding any more survivors was poor, he said.

Residents had very little time to evacuate before the thick cloud of ash engulfed the nearby villages and obstructed roadways.

What was once a collection of verdant canyons, hillsides and farms resembled a moonscape of ash, rock and debris today in the aftermath of the fast-moving avalanche of super-heated muck that roared into the tightly knit villages on the mountain's flanks, devastating entire families.

Authorities have not offered any estimate of how many people might still be missing.

One person told reporters: "Nobody is going to be able to get them out or say how many are buried here".

"With the help of the community, we're using every large building, the church, the school to shelter those who've lost their homes", said village leader Manuel Argueta.

Rescuers said earlier they discovered eight more bodies including four found in the rubble of a house and human remains discovered in a gully through which burning hot gas and volcanic matter had passed.
