Microsoft Reportedly Set to Acquire GitHub, Deal Could Happen Later Today

Microsoft has long had a complicated relationship open-source software-which is typically free to use and open for all developers to tweak and commercialize.

The current CEO of Microsoft, Satya Nadella, has been actively involved in courting coders and initiating coding initiatives since taking the helm at the company in 2014. It's not known how much Microsoft is willing to pay for the company, but it seems likely it would be at least a small multiple of the last valuation.

While Microsoft has a history of disastrous acquisitions in the past, in recent years the company has been a lot more successful, with recent examples like Xamarin and LinkedIn coming to mind, which bodes well for Microsoft's stewardship of Github.

Later today (or whenever the reported deal is made official), Microsoft will have plenty of questions to answer for concerned developers and programmers who rely on the platform to host their code. Since its founding in 2011, GitHub has become an essential tool for some of the biggest tech companies such as Apple, Amazon, and Google. While Microsoft share prices rose at the news, GitHub users are less convinced that the move would be a good idea.

Microsoft has announced it is to acquire the code-sharing site Github. Knowing GitHub's position with developers, Microsoft has also leaned on the service quite a bit itself, too and some in the company already claim it is the biggest contributor to GitHub today.

Japan urges caution on any North Korea agreement
Kim Yong Chol, the most senior North Korean to visit the United States in 18 years, spent nearly 90 minutes in the Oval Office. By the next day, he was signaling the event could be back on after a conciliatory response from North Korea.

GitHub was last valued at $2 billion after it had received $250 million in its last funding round in 2015. GitHub funder and former CEO Chris Wanstrath will become a Microsoft technical fellow and work on strategic software initiatives.

Conversely, of course, pre-Nadella, Microsoft wasn't working, and its embracing of open source has probably saved it from complete irrelevance.

The blog post also mentions that GitHub will continue to serve independently and act as an open platform.

On Friday, word of a possible acquisition of GitHub by Microsoft began circulating, based on report from Business Insider. The company has since grown to feature video game consoles (Xbox), consumer electronics, personal computers and cloud services (Microsoft Azure).
