Apple has blocked updates to Telegram since April

The allegation comes after Russian Federation demanded a ban on Telegram in April, when the app-maker refused to hand over the keys to its encrypted chats.

Apple has apparently been preventing updates for Telegram users worldwide following the ban on the app in Russian Federation.

For now, Telegram is still in the App Store, albeit with an out-of-date, non-GDPR-compliant version of the app.

"Unfortunately, some Telegram features, such as stickers, don't work correctly under iOS 11.4 that was just released - even though we fixed this issue weeks ago", reads a message Durov sent out to all Telegram users following the release of iOS 11.4 this week. The reason the Russian government wants Apple to remove Telegram from its App Store is because Telegram wouldn't provide it with the app's decryption keys.

On Monday, Russia's communications watchdog said it had requested Apple block push notifications for Telegram users in Russia, which would mean users would not receive alerts for new messages and thus render it less useful.

Durov insists that Telegram has done "the only possible thing, preserving the right of our users to privacy in a troubled country".

Russian Federation banned the app when Telegram refused to comply with a court order to allow authorities to decrypt private messages between users.

Louis Attorney Says Her Office Has Resolved Criminal Charges Against Greitens
Those charges stem from his alleged use of a donor list from a charity he founded, The Mission Continues, to benefit his campaign. Louis grand jury indicted Greitens on February 22 on one felony count of invasion of privacy related to the alleged photo.

Durov also claims the lack of app updates mean Telegram has also "been unable to fully comply with GDPR" before the May 25th deadline. "We are continuing our efforts to resolve the situation", the exec added.

App updates are essential to bolster the security of users and their data, and to comply with privacy laws and regulation.

Apple didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
