IISC Bengaluru featured among world's top 100 university rankings

American colleges have dominated again in the latest global university rankings with eight USA institutions coming in the top 10.

Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology is the only other Russian university to carve out a spot in the top 100 this year, according to Time Higher Education's annual college reputation ratings released Wednesday.

THE has released its annual list of university rankings by reputation, and though United Kingdom universities are again well represented, claiming nine out of the top 100, London's top institutions have all seen their brand recognition drop. Professors and researchers must be invited to vote. Stanford University and UC Berkeley rank third and sixth worldwide, respectively.

The Times list is one of the world's most respected university ranking league tables, alongside the QS World University Rankings.

Pennsylvania State University jumped more than 10 places to make the top 50 alongside other prestigious institutions as Duke and Columbia.

Europe claims 33 spots in total - with the UK, Germany and Netherlands most well-represented.

The US continues to dominate the rankings, counting eight institutions in the top 10 and 44 across the top 100. This marks the first time since 2014 that an Israeli university has been included in this list, the university said in a statement.

The new data demonstrated that Japans position as Asias top nation for higher education and research was “under serious threat”.

Despite the growth of universities across Asia, the new rankings show their reputations haven't risen with their growth.

“The National University of Singapore climbs three places to 24 – narrowing its distance from the top Chinese institutions – and Nanyang Technological University moves from the 81-90 band to the 51-60 bracket.”.

China has its own Academic Ranking of World Universities, launched in 2003. The full methodology can be found here.

The Academic Reputation Survey, available in 15 languages, uses United Nations data as a guide to ensure that the response coverage is as representative of world scholarship as possible. The questionnaire targets published scholars for their views on excellence in research and teaching within their disciplines and at institutions with which they are familiar.
