Suspects detonate IED in Canadian restaurant

Fifteen people have been injured after two men walked into an Indian restaurant and set off a bomb, Canadian police say.

Police are searching for two men seen entering Bombay Bhel restaurant on 5035 Hurontario St. near Eglinton Ave., shortly before the explosion at around 10:30 p.m. Thursday.

One eyewitness speaking to CBC said he was at a different restaurant nearby when the explosion happened.

"We have no indication to call it a hate crime or any kind of terrorism act", he added.

Two male suspects fled after detonating their improvised explosive device, police said in a Tweet. Surveillance images released by police show him wearing faded blue jeans, a dark zip-up hoodie with a brass coloured zipper and the hood pulled over his head, a grey t-shirt, and dark skate shoes.

The first hooded figure is described as male, 5'10-6 feet, stocky build, mid-20s, light skin, wearing dark blue jeans, dark zip up hoodie pulled over head, baseball cap with light grey peak, face covered with black cloth material.

"Nothing was said by these individuals", said Peel Region Sergeant Matt Bertram.

Peel region officers are working with the RCMP and forces from around the Greater Toronto Area as the search for the men continues. When asked whether they had lingered in the restaurant before setting off the device, Evans said, "Not that I'm aware of".

Meanwhile, Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj tweeted from her official handle and said, "There is a blast in Indian restaurant Bombay Bhel in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada". Mississauga is Canada's sixth-largest city. The restaurant's building appeared to be reportedly intact, however, there is a lot of broken glass at the scene of the incident.

The three people who were most severely injured are a 62-year-old woman and a 48-year-old woman, both from Mississauga. "We are seeking the public's assistance in trying to locate them".

Mayor Bonnie Crombie was also on hand for the press conference and described the incident as heinous. The plaza is expected to be remained sealed till the investigation is over. But they have said the arrested driver, Alek Minassian, posted a message on social media referencing a misogynistic online community before the attack. "This is not the Mississauga that I know".

Andre Larrivee, who lives nearby, told Canadian broadcaster CTV, a CBS News partner network, that he was watching television when he heard a "really loud" explosion.

One person likened the sound to an electric generator exploding, the news site reported.
