While the Trump administration had insisted on North Korea's complete, verifiable and irreversible dismantling of its nuclear programme, Pyongyang had always couched its language in terms of denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.

North Korea hardened its rhetoric toward the USA on Thursday, lashing out after remarks by Vice President Mike Pence and the White House national security adviser, John Bolton, that had linked the country with Libya.

Underscoring the high stakes, Trump said he had spoken with military leaders, as well as Japan and South Korea, and stressed that the United States was prepared for any threat.

"We even inwardly hoped that what is called "Trump formula" would help clear both sides of their worries and comply with the requirements of our side and would be a wise way of substantial effect for settling the issue", he said.

But storm clouds start gathering on May 16 when North Korea threatens to cancel the summit as it expresses "repugnance" towards Mr Trump's National Security Advisor John Bolton.

Trump likely felt he was losing control of the situation.

Kim Kye Gwan said North Korea's recent criticisms of certain USA officials had been a reaction to unbridled American rhetoric, and that the current antagonism showed "the urgent necessity" for the summit.

Casey Lartigue, co-founder of the Seoul-based organisation Teach North Korean Refugees (TNKR), said he had predicted the summit would be cancelled "at least once".

"The North Koreans here I know are unfazed".

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she imagine Kim "having a giggle fit" after Trump rescinded the offer of a summit. "He doesn't want to be the bride left at the altar". "Another camp may try to use this as evidence that diplomacy is doomed to fail, and that denuclearizing North Korea by force - attacking a nuclear weapons power - is the only remaining option". Because progress was being made.

Cheshire said Mr Kim was reportedly "unruffled" and the North Koreans had responded to Mr Trump's move with "equanimity".

But that said, not everyone agrees that Pence's baiting of North Korea was a deliberate ploy, especially when he made several rudimentary mistakes in the Fox interview, like saying Kim and Moon met at South Korea's presidential Blue House (they met at the DMZ).
