San Antonio tops national list in population gain; Houston growth is sluggish

The mostly downward trend in population gains isn't limited to Houston; Austin's net gain of residents has also steadily decreased since 2014. The Texas capital, which has seen growth cool down a bit recently, falls to second place.

The census ranks Bend as the 18th-fastest growing city in the US this decade. Six cities - including Salem, which grew by 9.7 percent - grew at faster rates. The typical Los Angeles or New York City homeowner, for example, spends close to 30 percent of her income on mortgage and taxes, compared with about 22 percent in San Antonio and Phoenix.

The statistics released today cover all local functioning governmental units, including incorporated places (like cities and towns), minor civil divisions (such as townships), and consolidated cities (government units for which the functions of an incorporated place and its parent county have merged).

Peoria suffered the steepest decline among the 50 largest cities in IL over the year, losing almost 1,500 people for a decline of 1.3 percent.

Last year, when I wrote about the census population data, I wondered how long Seattle could maintain such a breakneck pace of growth.

On the other end of the spectrum was the Will County village of Plainfield, which grew by more than 2 percent over the year and has grown 10 percent since 2010.
