Council Takes First Step to Enforcing Net Neutrality in San Antonio

Yesterday the Senate voted to repeal the recent changes to net neutrality rules made by the Federal Communications Commission.

Net neutrality is the principle that Internet Service Providers (ISPs) should provide equal access to all applications, content, platforms, and websites, and can not discriminate against content or content providers by making certain web page, applications, or videos load faster or slower than others.

"The FCC's net neutrality decision was a brazen attack on the principles of a free and open internet and it should absolutely be overturned by the Congress", Malloy said. The resolution also requires the approval and signature of President Donald Trump, who has spoken against a resolution of this nature in the past. Earlier this year, a coalition of 23 attorneys general, including Connecticut's Attorney General George Jepsen sued to stop the rollback of net neutrality.

For the bill to pass the House, 25 Republicans will have to join democrats in support of net neutrality according to The Hill.

Today's vote implications are significant-net neutrality is critical for our nation's progress and for the creation of good jobs in the future.

In the event, a number of states are creating their own laws that will ensure net neutrality remains locally, but some experts are questioning how enforceable it is.

U.S. hits Iran central bank governor with sanctions
The Treasury said Seif covertly moved "hundreds of millions of dollars" to "Hezbollah" from the IRGC via Al-Bilad Islamic Bank. At the time, the U.S. singled out the Central Bank of Iran as "complicit" in the operation, foreshadowing Tuesday's action.

Democrats say they're planning to carry the fight to salvage the concept that internet service providers (ISP) must treat all content the same into the 2018 midterms. "...[O] ur light-touch approach will deliver better, faster, and cheaper Internet access and more broadband competition to the American people-something that millions of consumers desperately want and something that should be a top priority", he said in a statement.

But Pai said the FCC decision will be beneficial for consumers nationwide. But, he cautioned, it remains unclear how many voters will actually be motivated by net neutrality to go to the polls.

Open-Internet advocates are challenging the new rule in federal court. With the FCC rules set to expire on June 11, 30 states have introduced net neutrality protection legislation, although regulation-averse Texas isn't one of them.

"We thank Senator Ed Markey for leading the charge and the 51 other Senators who supported the resolution, including Senators Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski and John Kennedy".

"Today is a monumental day", said Democratic senator Edward Markey during a debate. She predicts it may become a campaign issue in the Fall. "In other words, protecting net neutrality isn't about saving Netflix but about saving the next Netflix". As such, the end result of eliminating most meaningful regulatory oversight without organic market pressure in place is only likely to make existing problems worse.

Still, Democrats see their effort as something that will energize young voters who value unfettered access to the internet.
