Tornado Watch in region until 8 pm Tuesday

In the severe thunderstorm watch issued for the area through 9 p.m., the National Weather Service is calling for the potential for "widespread damaging winds and isolated significant gusts to 75 miles per hour".

Amtrak service in the Northeast has also been canceled due to the storm, according to WABC-TV.

Tornado warnings were posted Tuesday afternoon in Columbia, Montour and Northumberland counties.

Strong to severe thunderstorms are possible Tuesday afternoon into the evening. The watch is in effect until 11 p.m.

The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm watch for parts including central Maryland on Tuesday.

News 12 Long Island meteorologist Rich Hoffman said he expected some break of sunshine during midday hours before the rain moves in.

Weather radar from AccuWeather showed afternoon storms moving west to east across MA and northern CT, approaching Rhode Island after 5 p.m.

Rain is expected in the forecast on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.
