70 officers escort Ind. boy to school after dad's death

His father, Rob Pitts, was an officer in the Terre Haute police department in IN, and he was killed in a shootout earlier this month.

All five-year-old Dakota Pitts asked for was to be taken to school by one of his dad's co-workers and friends.

"He will definitely know that his dad was a hero".

The 16-year veteran of the Terre Haute Police Department was killed in an exchange of gunfire between police and a homicide suspect, on Friday, May 4.

Several of the officers came forward and presented Dakota with small tokens such as a T-shirt and a police patch.

According to CBS News, Pitts was the first Terre Haute officer to die since 2011.

He was a member of the Terre Haute Police Department for 16 years, following six years with the police force in the nearby city of Sullivan, where he lived and was buried.

Governor Eric Holcomb tweeted his condolences to Pitts' family. "Blood doesn't always make family, but I think the "Blue Family" went above and beyond", said Kelli Jones, Rob Pitts' sister.
