British rider Simon Yates remains in the overall lead as the race goes over to the Italian mainland.

Praia a Mare, May 11 - Ireland's Sam Bennett won the seventh stage of the Giro d'Italia in a mass spring finish Friday while Briton Simon Yates kept the leader's pink jersey he won on Etna Thursday.

The 28-year-old comfortably saw his way through the flat 159km course from Pizzo to Praia a Mare to finish in the peloton in 30th position.

"I said to him (Chaves) as soon as I caught him that he could take the stage".

"I feel as if I m getting better and better each day after Israel now, with the bigger picture in mind of getting to the third week as strong as possible and obviously this is the first main objective of the season for me and things are still on track".

Whatever happens as this year's race unfolds, Dennis has already had the honour of leading the Giro d'Italia, as well as showing - on stage 2, in particular - that he has the wherewithal to fight for the top spot on the GC after the disappointment of an agonising near-miss in the opening time trial in Jerusalem on stage 1. I was hoping not today and that I would get a little bit more confidence from the race, but there is still time. "I want to thank them all for the support, the team that's working hard behind the scenes and everybody that helped me to get to this point in my career".

There was an early break of three cyclists and the peloton allowed Davide Ballerini, Markel Irizar and Maxim Belkov an advantage of more than four minutes before it began to reel them in.

Yates' Mitchelton-Scott teammate, Esteban Chaves, remained third overall, 26 seconds behind.

Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) finished safely in the bunch to retain his 16-second lead over reigning champion Tom Dumoulin (Team Sunweb) in the general classification standings.

Rohan Dennis, who held the jersey heading into the stage, fell away during the final climb and is now 53s down on Yates. "For us as a team it was flawless".

The Giro ends in Rome on May 27. "I looked across the road and everyone was looking at each other".
