At rear, there's a two-piece tailgate that Rolls-Royce calls "The Clasp."' It's a nod to the days when luggage was mounted on the outside of motorcars.

Offered for $370,000 in Canada, the Cullinan is powered by a 6.75-litre, twin-turbo engine delivering 563 horsepower and 627 lb-feet of torque. Peak power is 420kW, with combined economy of 15 litres per 100km. Like the Phantom, the Cullinan uses distinctive rectangular headlights. Wheels are 22-inches, and the side profile is emphasized by a metal accent meant to conjure a Saxon sphere.

The Cullinan certainly promises to be one of, if not the most luxurious SUVs on the market, but why did Rolls-Royce finally chose to enter the SUV market?

There's also a glass partition which separates the boot area from the passengers, something that Rolls-Royce says will shield occupants from outside temperatures when the boot is open. Two rear seat configurations are offered: lounge or individual seats.

Each backrest folds, while at the same time the headrests move upwards to avoid making an imprint on the seat cushion. It's 200mm longer than the Bentayga, and 90mm taller and 350mm longer than the Range Rover.

'The super-luxury lifestyle is evolving and Rolls-Royce is in the lead, ' said the company's chief executive, Torsten Müller-Ötvös.

However, being the brand's first-ever SUV, the Cullinan was created to reach far more remote destinations that require tackling tough terrain (assuming that any owners would dare take such a machine over truly rough stuff). At 3106 carats, it remains the largest diamond ever discovered.
