North Korean officials accused the United States of "ruining the mood" Monday ahead of a historic meeting between President Trump and Kim Jong Un; saying the USA was "misleading" the world over the Hermit Kingdom's weapons program.

The USB was presented to Kim after he crossed the heavily guarded DMZ into South Korea by Moon Jae-in last month for the leaders' historic meeting at the border village of Panmunjom.

"We now have a date and we have a location".

Trump told the National Rifle Association's annual convention in Dallas on Friday that he had toned down his rhetoric in anticipation of the talks after labeling Kim "Little Rocket Man" previous year and threatening him with "fire and fury".

But Trump isn't the only one praising the U.S.'s involvement in North Korea relations.

According to various South Korean media outlets quoted by Business Insider, the USB drive contained an e-book and presentation on the "New Economic Map of the Korean Peninsula" which Mr Moon announced previous year. South Korea said USA troops need to stay in the area even after a peace treaty is concluded to replace the armistice. The report did not give further explanation. "What we need is only peace", he said.

Trump naturally credits himself for the changes on the Korean Peninsula.

"Panmunjom is set up, logistically and theatrically, as the obvious choice", Euan Graham, director of the International Security Program at the Lowy Institute in Australia, wrote on the think tank's blog.

President Trump tweeted Wednesday: "As everybody is aware, the past Administration has always been asking for three hostages to be released from a North Korean Labor camp, but to no avail. It may be liable to lead to the result of reviving our "threat" against the USA", it added.

As for Singapore, Graham noted the city-state's growing reputation as a "hub" for regional diplomacy, as well as the timing of holding the event next month - it is due to host the Shangri-La Dialogue, a major annual inter-governmental security forum from June 1-3, meaning much of the USA defense, intelligence, and national security hierarchy will be present.

The North Korean official also alleged that United States claims are misleading that Pyongyang is motivated by fear of USA military strength and concerns about aggressive economic sanctions put in place because of North's nuclear and missile programs.

"This third summit between the two leaders affirms the enduring strength of the United States-Republic of Korea alliance and the deep friendship between our two countries", the White House said in a statement.

In a Korean language version of the statement, the foreign ministry also warned the US that it should not misjudge North Korea's recent diplomatic efforts as "weakness".
