A statement released by the governor's office says the "danger is of such magnitude that it warrants preemptive and protective action in order to provide for the safety, health and welfare of the residents".

With new eruptions continuing into the weekend, there is high interest among people looking for a livestream of the erupting Hawaii volcano (information on how to find these livestreams can be found below) and others are sharing a video of the effects the eruptions have had on the island.

On Thursday, Hawaii's most active volcano, Kilauea, began a major eruption. It was not an explosive event, where lava shoots skyward in dramatic fashion.

Geologist Janet Babb of the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said that scientists had been following an "intrusion of magma" down the rift zone since Monday afternoon in anticipation of a possible eruption. She tells The Associated Press that there quite a bit of magma in the volcano's system. "These are a result of that increased seismic activity that you saw today", [Jessica Ferracane, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park public affairs specialist] said.

However, 2 homes have already been destroyed by the lava flows.

This was the largest quake in Hawaii since 1975, and generated small tsunami waves around the Big Island, triggering sea fluctuations that ranged from 8 inches in Hilo to 16 inches at Kapoho, Hawaii County Civil Defense said. Our thoughts and prayers are going out to the people of the Big Island. Yesterday afternoon the FAA issued a Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) for the area to prevent drones from interfering with first aid responders. Currently, the Leilani Estates area appears to be at greatest risk.

County, state and federal officials had been warning residents all week that they should be prepared to evacuate because an eruption would give little warning.

"We all have to understand how traumatic it is for the people being affected", Harry Kim, the mayor of Hawaii County said at a conference, ABC reported. The county is ordering evacuations for homes from Luana Street to Pohohiki Road.

Centered about 10 miles southwest of Leilani Estates, the quake was the strongest of a series of earthquakes and aftershocks that shook the Big Island all day.
