May appointed Sajid Javid, a second-generation migrant whose parents came to Britain from Pakistan, as Home Secretary on Monday morning, plugging a hole left when predecessor Amber Rudd fell victim to a growing controversy over the treatment of the so-called Windrush generation of immigrants.

Mrs Rudd handed in her resignation from the role of Home Secretary, on Sunday, after coming under fire over for the Government's handling of the Windrush scandal, where some migrants from Commonwealth countries, who settled in the United Kingdom, and their relatives had been declared illegal immigrants.

Those affected belong to the "Windrush generation", named for the ship Empire Windrush, which in 1948 brought hundreds of Caribbean immigrants to Britain, which was seeking nurses, railway workers and others to help it rebuild after the devastation of World War II.

'It is with great regret that I am resigning as home secretary, ' Amber Rudd wrote in her resignation letter to PM Theresa May.

Rudd resigned on Sunday after May's government faced an outpouring of indignation over its treatment of some long-term Caribbean residents who were wrongly labeled illegal immigrants.

"We need answers, not further cover-ups to save Theresa May from facing up to her involvement in the removal of rights, detentions and possible deportations of British citizens".

Javid is the son of a Pakistani bus driver who arrived in Britain in 1961 with one pound in his pocket.

Sajid Javid is yet to announce the specifics of any changes he'll make to the immigration policy.

"I should have been aware of this, and I take full responsibility for the fact that I was not", she said in her resignation letter to Mrs May, conceding that she "inadvertently misled" MPs.

At the weekend, Mr Javid told the pro-Brexit Sunday Telegraph that the Windrush scandal felt "very personal" to him as coming from a family of immigrants "it could have been me, my mum or my dad". "It's a outcome of the hostile environment created by this (Conservative) government", London Mayor Sadiq Khan, a member of the opposition Labour Party, said Sunday, according to AP.

Miss Rudd last week denied that the Home Office had targets for removing illegal migrants when questioned by the home affairs select committee.

And Labour MP and Windrush campaigner David Lammy, said promises made by the government should be urgently written into law.

With Rudd gone, the opposition can shift its focus to the prime minister, though the absence of an obvious successor capable of steering the divided Conservative parliamentary party through the Brexit talks will protect her in the short term at least.
