Mitt Romney did not win the Utah Republican Party's nomination on Saturday, meaning he must compete in a June primary election as he seeks to replace retiring US Sen. Romney is running to fill the Utah Senate seat being vacated by Senator Orrin Hatch (R). "I'm not Goliath. Washington, D.C., is Goliath".

As "somebody who's lived and worked and raised his family in Utah, balanced a budget", voters might see Kennedy as more conservative than Romney, the representative said.

Romney asked for delegates' votes after spending two months on the campaign trail visiting dairy farms, taking selfies with college students and making stump speeches in small towns.

When he made his bid official, Romney was considered a virtual lock for the GOP nomination and was not expected to face a serious primary challenger.

On Saturday, Romney told CNN he didn't know yet whether he would support Trump's 2020 re-election campaign, leaving him room to promote himself as an independent voice for Utah.

"I did find it unusual and somewhat disappointing to have an Federal Bureau of Investigation director go into such personal reactions - as opposed to 'nothing but the facts, ma'am; only the facts, '" Romney said in an interview with CNN at Utah's GOP convention.

Some Utah delegates and grassroots activists here have fought strenuously to maintain control over the process by keeping the party's complex nominating caucuses, instead of allowing candidates to secure a spot on the ballot by gathering signatures.

Mitt Romney may have one of the best-known names in national politics, but he's still going to have to face down almost a dozen Republican contenders in Utah on Saturday in his bid to restart his political career with a U.S. Senate seat.

After his failed 2012 presidential campaign, he moved to Utah, where he is also known for his role in the 2002 Winter Olympics and for becoming the first Mormon presidential nominee of a major political party.

The convention also contended with Romney's well-known disdain for and criticism of President Trump. Robert F. Bennett won just 25.9 percent of the convention vote, ending his political career and setting up a primary later won by Lee.

In 2016, Romney was a prominent "Never Trumper", calling the candidate a "phony, a fraud".

Trump, however, had endorsed Romney for Senate in February, despite a history of rivalry between them.

After the convention vote, Romney again pointed out that he has, for the most part, agreed with President on policy. "That is terrific for the individuals of Utah".
