Iannone was left to fight off the attentions of the Movistar Yamaha duo and did 50 per cent of the job as Maverick Vinales stuck a pass on him with 14 left to go and upped his pace to go away but by then, Marquez was already four seconds up the road. The recovery puts Marquez in prime position to win his 6th consecutive race at the Circuit of the Americas in Texas.

After losing touch with Marquez, Iannone soon came under pressure from Vinales, who made a move for second at Turn 1 on the seventh lap and enjoyed an untroubled run to the runner-up spot after that. I apologized to Maverick but I didn't realize he was behind me until I heard his engine. As a result, Vinales started from pole, while Marquez was placed fourth on the grid.

"I'm scared on the track when I'm with Marquez", Rossi had said.

He had been almost eight seconds clear with a lap to go before easing up at the end.

There was a brief exchange between the two riders and a stewards' inquiry followed to determine whether Marquez impeded his rival, before the Spaniard's pole was initially confirmed, but subsequently overturned by penalty.

The ideal weather conditions made for a tidy race, as Maverick Viñales (Yamaha), Andrea Iannone (Suzuki), and Valentino Rossi (Yamaha) battled it out for the final podium positions. The demotion did little to hinder Marquez as he and Iannone got off to good starts with the latter in the lead. The three-time world champion is racing only a week and a bit after surgery on a broken wrist sustained in the Argentina GP, and not only gained direct entry to Q2, but took a third row start in another superhuman effort.

The former champion was also passed by Tito Rabat and Aleix Espargaro, and ended his day in 11th, while Rabat went on to steal eighth from Miller.
