The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration said it will order inspection of about 220 aircraft engines as investigators have found that a broken fan blade touched off an engine explosion this week on a Southwest flight, killing a passenger.

CFM International, the maker of the engines subject to the order, estimated 352 engines in the USA are affected and 681 worldwide.

CFM is jointly owned by General Electric and France's Safran.

The order applies only to engines with more than 30,000 cycles which equates to roughly 20 years of service.

Last June, CFM issued a service bulletin to its customers recommending inspections of some of its engines.

The FAA said it will consider ordering expanded action "as we learn of additional information from this most recent incident".

The CFM 56-7B engines are on about 1,800 "new generation" 737s in service in the USA and about 6,400 worldwide.
