They say a shift in creative direction caused this game to be the first in the series to not include a standard story mode.

"As Black Ops 4's release date approached, it became evident that development on the single-player campaign wouldn't be completed", Polygon's report states. Activision has declined commenting on the rumor, though we'll know for sure on May 17 when the company officially unveils the game. Sources with knowledge of the project have told the outlet that it became evident as the game's fall launch date approached that they would not have time to finish the campaign and have since chose to scrap it. "The source described an emphasis on cooperative modes as a potential stand-in for the typical single-player campaign experience", wrote Polygon's Chris Plante.

When Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 launches this October, it will do so without a "traditional single-player" mode according to a Polygon report. And what better way to distract people from the loss of a campaign than leveraging the most wildly successful game genre to come along in years? If there is indeed no single-player for Black Ops IV, we are left to speculate on the exact reasoning.

Dropping the campaign from Black Ops 4 would be a big change, but not entirely unprecedented. That timeframe not only bucks the decade-long trend of November Call Of Duty releases, but it also gives a talented team like Treyarch slightly less development time on Black Ops 4 than it may have anticipated.
