Newcastle came from a goal down to defeat Arsenal 2-1 and surely guarantee Premier League survival.

Alexandre Lacazette opened the scoring for the Gunners, and it looked to be heading for a routine win for Arsene Wenger's men, with the club having claimed victory over the Magpies in the two side's last 10 outings.

The Magpies almost extended their lead with 14 minutes remaining but Perez could only hit the side-netting from close range. "We had 70 percent of the ball, were 1-0 up and in the end you lose 2-1 and you wonder how you can lose this game", Wenger told a news conference.

Wenger claimed some his players were tired following Thursday's Europa League clash with CSKA Moscow. It was Newcastle's first home win over the Gunners since 2005.

The Magpies fell behind to Alexandre Lacazette's early opener but Ayoze Perez equalised just before the half-hour mark.

Use of chemical weapons in Syria 'simply inexcusable': Mattis
The world knows the Syrian people have suffered terribly under the prolonged brutality of the (President Bashir al-) Assad regime. Recently, the Russian ambassador to Lebanon has vowed that Russia will shoot down any USA cruise missiles launched at Syria .

After taking the lead, the visitors took control of the game for the next ten minutes or so and they nearly got a second goal when a good passing move ended with Alex Iwobi forcing a good save from Martin Dúbravka.

But their lead was soon cancelled out by a sublime flick at the near-post from Perez, who latched onto DeAndre Yedlin's cross from the right.

And the Gunners' afternoon went from bad to worse when Matt Ritchie took advantage of some shoddy defending to smash home the victor.

Ritchie scored the victor against Manchester United on February 11 that kickstarted Newcastle's surge to safety and he did the same here, running onto Perez's flick off Islam Slimani's header to beat Petr Cech from 12 meters (yards).

It was nearly 3-1 a few minutes later when Kenedy was played through on goal by a great pass from Slimani but via a deflection from Mustafi, Kenedy'shot came back off the bar with Cech beaten.

The Emirates outfit will play Atletico Madrid in the Europa League semi finals for a chance to play Champions League football next season if they emerge champions.
