Russia vetoes US bid to form new Syria chemical weapons inquiry

The United States, meanwhile, was urging the U.N. Security Council to adopt a resolution that would condemn the continuing use of chemical weapons in Syria "in the strongest terms" and establish a new body to determine responsibility for chemical attacks.

Later in the day, a UN diplomatic source told Sputnik that there will be two documents for the vote - rival resolutions on the establishment of new United Nations Independent Mechanism of Investigation (UNIMI), another one set for the vote by Russian Federation. The move followed Russia's rejection of a U.S. draft resolution at the United Nations on Tuesday.

The US-drafted United Nations resolution would have established a new body to determine whether Syria was responsible for a chemical attack in Douma last week which killed 70 people.

Syrian government forces were on high alert and taking precautionary measures Tuesday at military positions across the country amid fears of a US strike in the aftermath of the attack near Damascus.

"Russia is holding the Syrian people to political ransom by supporting a regime responsible for at least four heinous chemical attacks against its people".
