Equal Pay Day: What's Being Done to fix the Gender Pay Gap

California women lose a combined total of more than $84.2 billion every year to the gender wage gap.

According to a report released on Equal Pay Day (April 10), the average working woman in Colorado earns 84 cents for every dollar a man makes.

Molson Coors Brewing Co. said its wage gap was nearly six per cent and the difference in bonuses was 26 per cent, while McCain Foods (G.B.) Ltd. said its wage gap was nine per cent but women earned 72 per cent lower bonuses.

Basing a woman's salary on what she was paid before merely "perpetuates" that gap, officials said.

It claims to pay its female staff, who make up 31 per cent of its 56 headcount, on average (median) three per cent more than their male counterparts.

Among all fifty states, Florida, California, and NY had the lowest degree of gender-based wage discrimination.

According to the Institute for Women's Policy research, women made an average of just 81.8 cents to the dollar of men's wages in 2017.

In Michigan, women make about $11,000 less per year than men for the same job with the same qualifications. Last year, women working in the state earned 68 cents for every dollar earned by men. Also in 2016, on the seventh anniversary of the Lilly Ledbetter Act, Obama instated equal pay rules, requiring companies with 100 employees or more to report their their pay data by gender.

Senator Corrado voted for the Diane B. Allen Equal Pay Act that passed the New Jersey Legislature recently. On average, they say, a woman makes 81 cents for every dollar a white man makes. The Massachusetts senator declared her support for ensuring that workers are paid equally, regardless of gender, and pointed to a ruling by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals as affirmation.

President Barack Obama took a number of steps to help close the wage gap during his presidency.

Economists are increasingly examining the role of "occupational segregation", or how women and men are steered toward different occupations.

The gap is even larger for Black and Latina women, who earn over $20,000 less than white, non-hispanic men.

The National Partnership's study indicated that wage inequality is a top concern for women across the country.

No one who cares about economic justice and the rights of women is celebrating this occasion. Undervaluing themselves is part of the reason, she says, as 50% of female survey respondents said they experienced impostor syndrome most of the time.
