Stranger Things Creators Getting Sued For Allegedly Stealing Short-Film Plot

Charlie Kessler, a film maker who directed "Montauk", a six-minute short film about an supernatural incident on a Long Island beach, has accused the brothers of stealing his idea and basing their entire show off of it. In the lawsuit, which was filed in Los Angeles, he accuses Matt and Ross Duff of the unauthorized use and exploitation of his 2012 short movie called Montauk and the script for The Montauk Project too.

Kesser says that in April 2014, he and his agents pitched the Duffer Brothers the short film concept as a full-scale TV series, which never eventuated.

The creators of Netflix's megahit 80's sci-fi series Stranger Things-The Duffer Brothers-are being sued for allegedly plagiarizing their show off of a short film.

Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer have been sued amid allegations that the concept for one of Netflix's biggest success stories was improperly lifted from an uncredited source.

Interestingly enough, "Stranger Things" was originally going to be called and set in Montauk, with a focus on the area's conspiracy theories. "This is just an attempt to profit from other people's creativity and hard work". It claims that Kessler's pitch was an implied-in-fact contract. By its 2016 release, the show's name had changed and it was set in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana.

Stranger Things was originally set in Montauk, Long Island, but the show changed its setting to in (and filmed in Georgia). This means that if the lawsuit is successful it could threaten the planned third and fourth seasons ofStranger Things, preventing them from being made. The centerpiece of the flick involves top secret government experiments. a key plot point in "Stranger Things".

The brothers behind the instant Netflix hit have found themselves embroiled in a lawsuit.

Stranger Things also appears to have borrowed elements from the quasi-true Montauk Project story, though the Duffer brothers have never officially confirmed this.
