AI + Research, or AI + R in Microsoft for short, grew by 60 percent in the first year - from 5,000 people originally to almost 8,000 people - through hiring and acquisitions, and by bringing aboard additional teams from other parts of the company.

Windows chief Terry Myerson is leaving Microsoft. He oversaw numerous company's products and services, including Windows, Xbox, and HoloLens. One division, which will be called Experiences & Devices, will be headed by executive vice president Rajesh Jha.

More big changes could be on the way for Windows soon.

Microsoft is also creating two new engineering teams focusing on artificial intelligence and its cloud business. Zander's group will also include Roanne Sones, manager for the Strategy and Ecosystem team, which is responsible for working with Microsoft's OEMs and silicon vendors. The company is increasingly focussing on enterprise technology and solutions such as Office 365 and not so much on Windows or devices.

To do that, it has a markedly shorter boost phase, minimizing the infrared footprint that could be spotted by USA satellites. However, it's unclear when, exactly, it will be ready to go into operation and replace the much older SS-18 Satan missile.

She said she told members of that team to pace themselves, describing the situation as a marathon rather than a sprint. But they can not say for sure whether SamSam is a single group of cybercriminals or a loose hacking collective.

As the WDG fracture plans were being drawn up, Nadella says he consulted with 21-year Microsoft veteran Terry Myerson about the new company structure.

"The objective of this team is to instill a unifying product ethos across our end-user experiences and devices", Nadella said.

Myerson's Windows and Devices Group (WDG) is being broken up. Nadella noted that computing experiences have evolving to include multiple senses and are no longer bound to one device at a time. Surface chief Panos Panay has been elevated to Chief Product Officer, and will lead devices vision and push company's efforts into hardware and software for first-party devices. Kudo Tsunoda and Brad Anderson will support New Experiences and Technology and Enterprise Mobility and Management. Within this engineering team, Jason Zander will serve as executive vice president of Azure. Eric Boyd, now corporate vice president of AI data and infrastructure will lead a new AI Cognitive Services & Platform team and drive Microsoft's a variety of AI and machine learning services. Most of the company's other AI tools will move under the wing of a new AI Cognitive Services & Platform group. Two early tasks will be to detect whether AI systems have accidentally incorporated biased points of view and to make sure all Microsoft's efforts abide by the EU's new General Data Protection Regulation.

Microsoft is actually coming into the game a little behind when it comes to merging together cloud services with AI research. Harry Shum, executive vice president of AI & Research, will continue to head up that somewhat streamlined organization, which Microsoft created in 2016.
