Launched back in September 2011, Tiangong-1, an experimental space station had a design life of two years.

Staff of the Space Debris Room of the European Space Agency in Darmstadt, Germany are monitoring the movement of the decommissioned Chinese space station Tiangong-1.

Still, the chances of anyone being hit by a hunk of Tiangong are about 1 in 1,000,000,000,000, according to The Aerospace Corp., a California-based research group that monitors all goings-on above Earth via its Center for Orbital and Reentry Debris Studies.

A Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson today said it is unlikely any large parts will reach the ground.

An unmanned, uncontrolled Chinese space station is hurtling toward Earth and will probably come crashing through the atmosphere sometime this weekend, experts say. The estimated "target area" for where debris could fall encompasses everywhere 43 degrees north and south of the equator, which narrows it down to somewhere in the United States, or southern Europe, Asia, Australia, or South America. The Tiangong, or Heavenly Palace, is orbiting at an average height of about 216.2 kilometers, the announcement noted, but did not disclose any reentry location.

As per a report by TheStar, the space station was last seen streaking across the Malaysian skies for 81 seconds at 3:19 AM (Malaysian time).

The space craft's descent is now being tracked by Aerospace engineering and the ESA - and say it is now dropping out of orbit by about 2.5 miles a day.

The Tiangong 1, which means heavenly palace, was China's first space station and launched in 2011.The station, which is about the size of a large school bus, weighing almost 9 tons, is now uncontrollably falling back to Earth.

'If you imagine the green low risk area on the map is the part of the road we're trying to walk across, the quickest way is to go at 90 degrees - straight across.

No one has ever been killed by space debris and only one person has ever been hit by space debris.

Given the uncontrolled nature of Tiangong-1, experts will not be able to predict a precise point or time of reentry until shortly before it happens.

It all depends on when the space station re-enters Earth's atmosphere, and this can not be accurately predicted yet. Back in 1979 NASA's first space station called Skylab made an out-of-control reentry and burned up in the atmosphere.
