Arnaud Beltrame, 44, a gendarme who once served in Iraq, had been raced to hospital fighting for his life after being shot by the gunman during the siege at the Super U store in the southwestern town of Trebes near the Pyrenees mountains.

The supermarket's manager, who would identify herself only as Samia, was in her office when she heard the shots. The deceased was a Lieutenant Colonel.

The attacker, Radouane Lakdim, 26, a Moroccan-born French national, was a petty criminal already on the radar of French police for his links to radical Salafist networks, authorities said.

"The American organizers of the French president's state visit to the United States wanted to be at the height of the reception at the Eiffel Tower where ..." "They are very aware of this sadness, which affects them as well".

Lt-Col Beltrame's death takes the number killed to four.

Two people have been detained in the case, one woman close to Lakdim and a 17-year-old male friend.

It wasn't clear whether the knife and handgun found were the weapons he wielded when entering the supermarket. I feel deeply for the victims", she said, adding that Beltrame "is a hero.

Earlier Friday the gunman had hijacked a car in Carcassonne and shot the two people inside, killing the passenger and leaving the Portuguese driver in a critical condition.

"We have to stop being naive". He wasn't authorized to speak publicly amid the investigation. "In small towns, they are traumatising".

The priest, identified as Father Jean-Baptiste, said he married the man to his wife before he died, The Sun reports.
