Sensex closes after biggest intra-day record high in nearly 1.5 years

At 9.23 am the BSE Sensex was trading 25.13 points or 0.0 percent up at 33,943.07 while the NSE Nifty was trading at 10,440, up 18.60 points or 0.18 percent. It was followed by Tata Steel (Rs. 514.73 million), Tata Consultancy Services (Rs. 389.80 million) and Bank Of India (Rs. 384.53 million).

The gainers were ITC by 2.66 pc to Rs 266.30, Wipro by 2.09 pc to Rs 291.15, Infosys by 2.07 pc to Rs 1187.45 and Bharti Airtl by 1.60 pc to Rs 408.40.

The barometer 30-scrip Sensitive Index (Sensex) of the BSE, which opened at 33,818.22 points, traded at 33,950.87 points - up 32.93 points or 0.10 per cent from the previous session's close.

Gaining over 350 points during the day, the Sensex was at 33,630.39 points, up 323.25 or 0.97% at 11am.

Retail inflation surprisingly slowed for the second consecutive month to 4.4 per cent in February from 5.1 per cent in January and 5.2 per cent in December.

Earlier during the day, healthy macro-economic data, along with healthy buying in banking, consumer durables, oil and gas and healthcare stocks had lifted the key Indian equity indices. On the NSE, Yes Bank shares rose to Rs 317.90, 1.53 per cent higher than the previous closing. The stock on Wednesday closed 3.37 per cent higher at Rs 638.

The index finally settled 21.04 points or 0.06 per cent lower at 33,835.74.

Bucking the trend BSE small-cap index rose by 1.14 per cent and mid-caps gained 1 per cent as retail investors raised their bets.

"Asian stocks boosted sentiment on the domestic bourses while global stocks gained as worldwide trade-war concerns abated and were replaced by economic optimism following a stronger USA jobs report released over the weekend", Karthikraj Lakshmanan, Senior Fund Manager - Equities, BNP Paribas Mutual Fund said. While the Shanghai Composite gained 0.59 per cent, Hong Kong's Hang Seng edged higher by 1.93 per cent and Japan's Nikkei was up 1.65 per cent.

In the Eurozone, Paris CAC 40 rose 0.32% while Frankfurt's DAX up 0.36% in early deals.
