Pellegrino was sacked last night after the Saints dropped to one point above the relegation zone and won only one of their last 17 Premier League games.

Southampton dismissed Pellegrino yesterday after just one victory in 17 league games under the manager.

Hughes is understood to be keen to return to management and believes Southampton to be a well-run club blessed with talented players that he had targeted - and missed out on - during his time with Stoke.
