Maharashtra farmers protest against agrarian distress

Apart from the farmers affiliated to the All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS), social activists and political cadres linked to the Aam Aadmi Party, Shiv Sena and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena could also join the march in Mumbai.

Mumbai: After walking for about 180 km in the soaring temperature, about 35,000 farmers and agricultural workers from entered the country's financial capital Mumbai on Sunday, demanded complete loan waiver and higher support prices for their crop among other things.

Mumbai: Over 35,000 farmers from across Maharashtra, who embarked on a "Long March" from Nashik on March 6 to press for a complete loan waiver, will protest outside the Vidhan Bhavan (Maharashtra Assembly) on Monday.

Nearly 70 percent of the 300 million Indians are directly or undirectly dependened of agriculture. Last month, state Governor Vidyasagar Rao told the state assembly that said the government has transferred more than Rs 12,000 crore into bank accounts of more than 3.1 million farmers. The farmers will gather at Somaiya Ground in Sion from where they will announce further course of action.

The Devendra Fadnavis-led government had requested the farmers to withdraw their protest march, but the farmers have refused to do so. Assuring that the protests will not disturb the city, he said, "We will begin our rally after 11 am so that students appearing for their Class 10 board exam don't face any difficulties".

Nawale, however, said that the march to the Vidhan Bhavan remains unchanged despite the planned talks between the govt and the farmers. "Give me a chance, whenever you will need me, I will be there for you", the MNS president had assured.

Senior Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde visited the protesters late Friday night, but clarified that he had come with party chief Uddhav Thackeray's message and not as a minister in the Maharashtra government.

Traffic on most of the roads would be blocked due to the farmers' march so the Maharashtra government advised the students appearing for the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examination to reach their centres before time on Monday. "All Congress legislators (are) with the farmers", the Congress leader said.
